Another terrible The Iliad retelling I've had the misfortune to read in my hopeful wish that there might, just might be one that's good if not on par with Homer

I'm always a sucker for anything Trojan War related, so when I saw this, I was expecting some sort of revisionist feminist take on it, a la Margaret Attwood's brilliant "Penelopiad" of a few years back.No such luck. Francesca Petrizzo apparently believes that the big problems with the Trojan War story were as follows:1) The plot made sense.2) Helen didn't sleep with enough hot guys.3) Helen was insufficiently self-pitying.Not for this book the many, many suitors, or the oath they swear to each o [...]

I liked it, a bit different point of view, but really nice book :)

This was a telling of the illiad from Helen's point of view. It was quite interesting to read the story this way. The people were different to how I've read before. It was good though. All Helen seemed to have going for her was her beauty and that just never seemed to be enough. She drifted from one one man to another with no enjoyment taken in anything. Not much was the real story but that didn't take away how much I liked the book. I liked how when she finally married menelaus the descriptions [...]

Proof that people who know anything about the Spartans shouldn't read fictionalised accounts of ancient Sparta. At the end of chapter 21 the author writes about a ship flying black flags to bring news of the death of a king. Sparta is landlocked in the mountains. Not on the sea. Sigh. Did Petrizzo even bother looking at a map? Her version of hector is just inexcusable. The love story between Hector and Andromache just should not be messed about with. Hector's nobility and righteousness is what m [...]

I would really give this book a 2.5 instead of just a 2. At times I was annoyed with the writing style but I managed to charge through it. However the author is 19, so maybe that had an effect (either way publishing at age 19 is nothing to sneeze at). I have always been interested in this time period which is the only reason why I picked up the book (I really hate the title!). If you are looking for a great read on Helen of Troy then look forwhich I enjoyed immensely. This book just didn't cut i [...]

E merita tutti i riconoscimenti ottenuti all'estero.

All telling + no showing = not for me. Also confused me to no end. From Diomedes to Achilles to Menelaus what's the deal? I think something was lost in the translation cause I couldn't figure out what was wrong with the last man

This was very intense book and I liked writing style but characterization of many characters didn't work for me. Maybe if I didn't read the original first, I would like this book better. There was just too much made up stuffs

Y me resulto realmente chocante.
