When I was in 5th/6th grade, I must have read this book like 6 times. I absolutely loved it. It gave me a window into the history of the country my family came from. Plus the story of Yang and his friends, the bonds that they have, the struggles, and his quest to find his family is awesome. After I graduated from elementary school, the library gave me the book because my name was the only one on the checkout card. And it was on there several times over. My gateway into Chinese historical fiction [...]

I read this book several times in junior high and high school, which is appropriate since it's the story of a pre-teen, young-teen orphan boy in pre-WWII China. Yen and his family are refugees in Japanese-occupied Shanghai where his parents are killed and his little sister disappears. Yen winds up on the streets, stealing and begging to survive as part of a diverse gang of other orphans. This book opened a window for me into another culture and another time and it helped me keep an open mind whi [...]

Sobering but enlightening account of how some children had to survive during China's massive wars - around the time my parents would have been growing up. The title comes from a Chinese cheng2 yu3: To beat a tiger, one needs a brother's help.Even though this book is written by a Newbery Award Winning author, and measures up equally to Young Fu of the Upper Yangtze in my opinion, it doesn't seem to be in print - I got my copy as a library discard for 25 cents. Hmmm.
