      Susumu seventy years after the events tells this story to his son who repeats it as it is told to him with some ancillary information from archives to explain each chapter. Susumu as a child is living in Irkutsk and traveling across Manchuria and Siberia with his distant father and loving mother. It is hard to imagine a 6 to 8 year old boy having such precise recollections after 70 years.
