Waning Metaphorically by Michael Poeltl contains an array of short stories that range from flash fiction to longer stories. Several of the stories are written from the point of view of an emotion, which I found to be thought provoking as well as entertaining. “Death Wish” was probably the story that I found the most memorable. The story examines guilt on an extreme level. The main character of the story cannot move forward from the past he created. When I learned what happened in his past, I [...]

Michael Poeltl’s book of short stories, Waning Metaphorically, is a light read with heavy questions. Perfect for summer cottages or late winter nights by a fireplace. Like Robert Sawyer, who I often read for the “what if” questions posed, Poeltl strength is in a similar vein. What if some of the major emotions spoke to directly to us? What would they say? More importantly, would the reader believe them? There are definitely moments when I don’t want to believe Fear. Is that the author to [...]

'Waning Metaphorically' is both an enlightening read and an existential crisis. It brushes away the cheery coating of modern life and takes a mercilessly close look at the human condition. Using both narrative fiction and stream-of-consciousness writing, Poeltl reminds us that sadness and unhealthy attachment are as natural to us as breathing, and if we think our impact on the world is a big one, get ready for a surprise: it did just fine before we were born and it will carry on after we're dust [...]

A life really can be summed up. If it can be put into metaphor for others to learn from, all the better. This is a book of fourteen short stories which seemed to fit nicely in a single collection. I have many others in my slush pile of stories, but these ones seemed to offer something more . Learn from them what you can, if all you experience is a new story, what's so wrong with that? Thanks,Mike
