Like this author’s other work I’ve read, she still knows how to tell a dramatic and emotional tale. The reader is sucked in despite the pitfalls and down sides to the book. I zoomed through inside 24 hours, even despite being at work for 9 hours of the day; it was that engrossing. The author keeps her skills at historical setting and details sharp. The harshness of battle and its effects see thorough exploration, not being softened for her readers. The tension of a territory constantly changi [...]

Jessica James just jumped herself right on to my favorite author's list. This new-to-me author grabbed my attention from page one and held it until the final word. It evoked every emotion possible from a reader. A mixture of grit, determination and respect provided unforgettable characters. Full of imagery, intrigue, intricate details and great historical research, the story line was wonderful. The quotes that introduced each chapter tantalized as they hinted at what might happen next.Douglas Be [...]

Faith, Hope, and Love Abidebut the greatest of these is love. Those words continued to go through my mind as I read this deeply moving novel by Jessica James. Above and Beyond is a book which I will not soon forget. It is beautifully written and the focus is on love conquering all.Sarah Duvall is an outcast in her Virginia community because she married a Union officer during the Civil War. It was the ultimate betrayal of her country in the eyes of her neighbors who are staunch Confederate suppor [...]

An author who truly has the gift to place the reader right in the time and setting in which her stories take place, Jessica James offers a beautifully poignant love story in "Above and Beyond: A Novel of the Civil War". Young widow Sarah Duvall is reviled in her Virginia homeland for having married a Union officer. Her own brother considers her to be a traitor. She is known to support the Union cause, but what is known to only a few is that she secretly spies for the Confederacy. Stalwart Colone [...]

Told mostly (I do believe) from the male point-of-view, this sweet (as in level of sex) historical romance novel reads smoothly and keeps the reader engaged from start to finish.Cocky, battle-ready, ladies' man and Confederate officer, Douglas Benton, meets his match in double-agent, bible-reading, friendless Union widow, Sarah Duvall.Over the course of the war they alternately annoy and intrigue one another while also saving the other's life on more than one occasion. Why I read it: Read the aut [...]

From the winner of the coveted John Esten Cooke Award for Southern Fiction comes a sweeping tale of love and redemption during the American Civil War. Above and Beyond is a romantic tale of two people thrown together by war and torn apart by Destiny. It comes on the heels of Noble Cause, an epic love story that was often compared to Gone with the Wind and Cold Mountain. As one reader says, Jessica James has a gift for reaching into the past and bringing it back to life. In Above and Beyond, Conf [...]

Jessica James is quickly becoming one of my favorite historical fiction authors. The characters in her books are so amazingly developed and you are hooked into their lives almost from the first paragraph. This is a wonderful story of sacrifice and courage. It really makes you contemplate the question of "Would I really die for someone I loved?" Sarah and Colonel Benton are polar opposites but can't help impact each other's lives. If you love the Civil War time period and unbelieveable characters [...]

Definitely a little cheesyI never have been very fond of romance novels. It was a very predictable ending and the wording was very flowery, which got on my nerves a little bit. Everything was covered in dew and appeared "celestial". That all being said, in the middle I did really get lost in the story and I connected with most of the characters, although Sarah did seem a little too perfect for me. It was a nice, easy, and overall fun read.

The most frustrating thing about the book were the amount of typos. I can understand maybe if it had been freebut come on! Even the main character's name was misspelled at one point. The book lacked creativity and plot. After having read another book that I liked by this same author, I felt this one was whipped out quickly and was rather the same as the one before. I think there is better historical fiction out there.

Enjoyable ReadI loved Shades of Gray by this author and was most anxious to read this story, also set during the American civil war. I found the first part of the book more engaging than the last, and while I liked the heroine, Sara Duvall, I was not as taken with Colonel Benton so I wasn't "rooting" for them as a couple. Overall not a bad read, just less than I was expecting.

I liked the story okay, but I think it could have been better. I haven't read any books about the Civil War era from a southern perspective except for Gone with the Wind and I think the perspective could have been explained better. If this story was broadened to include more than just the romance and the characters were developed deeper, it would be on my list of favorites.

This is the second book I've read from this author and liked it alot. It's a love story during the civil war from those fighting for the South. I like reading about their Southern loyalties and felt for them as battles were fought on their lands. My only complaint is my frustration with the couple admitting their love to each other so late! I still enjoyed it.

Great readThis book grabbed me. I don't usually enjoy historical novels but this one I truly enjoyed. Such a terrible time in our nation's history and so much pain and loss. Great job - Great book.

Civil War story about a woman who is a spy for the Confederates and a commander who finds his way to her heart. I felt the story was pretty enjoyable, but the ending was pretty lame. Definitely worked for a workout book (read while I ran) but not awesome.

So Satisfying. This book kept me engaged start to finish. It was great to read a love story with no sex scenes. And even better to read one where the main characters had honor and valued it. Being a Christian novel made it that much richer.

Loved this book as much as Jessica James' first book. She truly captures the personal conflicts experienced by Civil War soldiers, particularly those from the border states. Recommend to all who enjoy historical fiction. Well done!

This was a fantastic story about Confederate spy Sarah Duvall that take a big risks and helps a cavalry office escape the Yankees. She risks everything including her life. Will the love of the man that she worked with be enough to bring her back.Another wonderful storyline by Jessica James!

Hard to believe a woman of her age would be living alone in a war zone. Poor editing in the ebook.

    20. Terry on said:

Another winner by Jessica James. I liked how she showed the abuse, depravity and devastation that was shown the general population in the border states by both sides in the Civil War.
