From star quarterback to injured recluse, Rick Dial has been through a lot as a young teenager. His father left home, he found himself in a near-crippling accident and next thing he knows he is kidnapped and told he needs to save the his country through a virtual reality type of system called Mindwar. It is a fairly faced paced read and some interesting concepts. Definitely more a read for a tech or gaming fan. For that is how Mindwar is laid out, A gaming world with monsters and villains to be [...]

I really did like it. It was a bit confusing but I loved it! No cussing, PG romance, Christian themes, I love it! Thank you Mr. Andrew Klavan for this clean book. Thank you!

Klavan instantly surprised and entertained me with his Homelanders series, but this one was a bit of a pain to slog through in comparison. Not that it was a bad story, though. It was a pretty entertaining little mixture of Homelanders and The Mortality Doctrine. But it was quite complicated compared to Homelanders, much less futuristic and deadly than The Mortality Doctrine, and overall actually pretty middle-of-the-road. Also, I found it a lot harder to connect to Rick than to Charlie, largely [...]

My mom has superpowers. I'm sure of it. She was able to find a copy of this book over a week before it's release (it's still not released yet at the time of this review). Anyway.Rick Dial used to have it all. The hero of the football team, got a girl, plenty of friends, everything. But that all ended when the accident happened that would render his legs useless. Seemingly right after, his dad walked out on the family, leaving only a note that he'd met back up with his college girl. Since then, [...]

Rick has had a tough couple of months. His father left Rick's mother and Rick and his little brother Raider, and shortly after that, Rick was in a bad car accident that broke his leg and effectively ruined his football career, so he's been spending his days in his darkened bedroom, playing videogames. When he finally leaves the house and goes for a walk, he gets jabbed with a tranquilizer, kidnapped, and recruited by the government to work on MindWar because of his skills. An evil doer named Kur [...]

I really enjoyed this book, surprisingly so. I am not a huge fan of Science Fiction; I am more of a Fantasy girl, and have had little interest in video games throughout my life. I had to read it for a state award selection committee, but found that it wasn't Science Fiction-y in the technical sense that can bore, or not being able to understand because of jargon. Klavan wrote enough details and explained them well enough to understand the concepts, while keeping it light and interesting. This bo [...]

After an accident caused him to lose his athletic prowess, his status as highschool quarterback, and his general meaning in life, Rick Dial has drowned out the pain with a new obsession with playing video games. But his world is again rocked off of its axis when Rick is suddenly taken to a secret location where he learns that a very deadly war is going on, one that threatens the very existence of society as he knows it. When he agrees to join the battle using his skills, he finds himself tested [...]

Another great entry into the YA thriller genre by Andrew Klavan. What starts out as a gamer wish-fulfillment fantasy becomes a well rounded story of family, duty and healing. Rick, the main character of the novel, starts out more pitiful than likable, an angsty teen wallowing in misery and escaping from the world in response to family issues and recent physical disability. However, following the familiar but nevertheless enjoyable pattern of Klavan's recent YA works, our hero discovers there is [...]

4.5 starsAwesome as usual, Andrew Klavan writes a fast, haunting and mesmerizing story of a very well developed hero.My problem was that I guessed a twist in the story, which surprises me because I have never done this before. Despite of that, this is an incredible adventure and I'm looking forward to read the next book!

In the book, Mindwar, by Andrew Klavan, a teen named Rick Dial has a great life ahead of him. He's a hero, quarter back number 12, and the hometown hero has a full ride to collage. Now he's been in a horrible accident. His full ride, his athletic ability, even his dad, everything, is gone. Was it really an accident? Or was the truck meant to hit him? Since Rick lost everything all he's been doing is sulking in his room playing video games. His score has surpassed the best of the best, and it has [...]

In one of America's darkest hours, the only one they can rely on is a crippled video game addict. In Andrew Klavan's "Mindwar" Rick Dial was involved in a crash, leaving him unable to use his legs, so he holed up and played video games, until he was approached by the government for a secret mission to enter a virtual realm and stop a Russian hacker. "Mindwar" uses a part system, but calls them 'levels' instead of parts. One of the parts is called the boss level, for example. Klavan incorporates [...]

My CommentsThere are two things that immediately occurred to me as I started reading this book. One, the main character is a teen boy and there are very few books I’ve read from a guy’s perspective. I really liked it. Two, this book is the first of a trilogy and I want to read the entire series. I’m also into video games even though I’m a casual gamer and I’ve never set any records, I play because it’s fun or I return the game. Even though you don’t have to appreciate video games t [...]

Not the type of book I usually go in for or listen to at all: but we have been listening to everything we can get at by Andrew Klavan recently. Or should I say, Grand Emperor Klavan? 'Mindwar' had an original story and concept that would appeal to younger readers: and Klavan's writing style was almost perfect. His books tend to lack the whimsical quaintness and sweetness which many people associate with Christian Fiction. There is just the right mix of realism with an underlying inspirational th [...]

Definitely intense, keeps you turning the page. Took me a bit to get used to the choppy writing style, but still a great story line with all its government conspiracies, a matrix like world, and the real world. Excited to start book 2!!

Book pacing was okay. Main character was a little whiny but not too bad. Some of the 'good' characters actions didn't make sense as to how they were dealing with the main threat. But overall book was okay. Not really captivating enough for me to want to finish the series.

MindWar is an edge-of-your-seat, action-packed thriller that will pull on your heartstrings with its haunting yet poignant messages of family and hope. 'Mindwar' is the first book in an exciting new young adult series that follows our main character, Rick Dial, as he tries to piece his life back together from the disasters that happened months before. His father up and left his family to be with a younger woman, and then Rick was in a terrible wreck, which crippled both his legs - which meant that his football days and the full scholarship to Syracuse - were a thing of the past. Rick hasn't been dealing with the changes in his life very well. H [...]

I've read most of Andrew Klavan's young adult novels. I liked some and thought others were okay, decent. For Mindwar, the idea of the book sounded fascinating. I enjoyed the book though it was a quick, easy read. But I wouldn't call the book great. The set-up of the book itself was fantastic and had me excited from the start. By this, I refer to the chapter titles and sections the book is divided in. Each chapter title is the name of a video game! I thought that was cool (and yes, I did look up [...]
