Short fiction mysteries seem to be a vanishing species. Back in my younger days, There were a number of short fiction magazines that specialized in mysteries and detective stories. The most popular ones were Ellery Queen's, Alfred Hitchcock's, and Mike Shayne's Mystery Magazines. Mike Shayne's was basically hard-nose detective tales, Ellery Queen's was a combination of usually more civilized detective stories and similar who-dun-its, while Alfred Hitchcock's went in for suspense mysteries usuall [...]

Apprehended was my very first taste of Jan Burke's crime fiction, author of the Irene Kelly Mysteries series. This collection contains four short stories (the last three were previously included in Eighteen):- Unacknowledged (a previously unpublished piece featuring Irene Kelly and Frank)- Why Tonight- A Fine Set of Teeth (J Burke's first Irene Kelly story)- A Man of My StatureThree out of the four stories deal with crimes that are not just black and white, and therefore they present a moral dile [...]

It's been ages since I've picked up an anthology and I certainly wasn't disappointed in this one. I have read several of Jan Burke's Irene Kelly series. The first story takes the reader back to the days when Irene Kelly was in journalism school. More of a cozy mystery, a new girl arrives and there's just something not quite right about her. Irene starts investigating when her best friend becomes interested in her.The other three short stories Why Tonight, A Fine Set of Teeth, and A Man of My Sta [...]

Apprehended by Jan Burke is a 2014 Pocket Start publication. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.Apprehended is mainly a re-issue of a collection of short stories previously published in the "Eighteen" anthology. However, this one does included a never before released short story entitled "The Unacknowledged" featuring Irene Kelly which is the first story in the book. This was my favorite story,' actually. The story is set in 1973 while Irene is s [...]

This is more of a 2.5 star read for me. It is a set of 4 short mystery stories, with a bit of a twist to each of them. The Unacknowledged is about a college student, new to the school, who has a mysterious past. Interesting, but quite complicated, with a present story tied to the past. Thanks to a helpful college professor, the mystery is solved. Why Tonight? was my favorite, simply because I liked the characters. This is about a woman who finds that her husband has committed suicide on the nigh [...]

I really enjoy Jan Burke's writing, have been reading her Irene Kelly series since the get-go. This little collection is different; she writes with a variety of disparate, yet entirely authentic voices and also experiments with different settings than the usual. And all of it is really good.In fact, the only reason star number five is missing is because a hundred pages isn't a whole book, as far as I am concerned, it's part of a book, or maybe a large pamphlet. I felt I was just getting warmed u [...]

“Apprehended” was published in 2014 and was written by Jan Burke (janburke). Ms. Burke has published 10 novels and many short stories. “Apprehended” is a collection of four of her short stories. While these would be considered mysteries, they are more straight forward in their explanation of the respective crimes than you would normally expect of a mystery. Each describes a crime, why and how it was committed, without the investigative discovery that you would normally expect of a myster [...]

I love books of short stories. Jan Burke has included several of her Irene series. Of the four stories, my favorite was "Unacknowledged" an Irene college story. The other three stories were in a previous anthology. All are well written, give a good story and keep you interested to the last page. A great gift for the mystery buff in your family.

I love anthologies, they are a good introduction to any author if you have not read the authors books. In this case it is the first time I have read Jan Burke. But I will soon pick up another to add to my reading shelf. Can't wait to read a full novel.

It was okay if you like short stories. I love Jan Burke's books but prefer the novels to the short stories.

Relish these stories over breakfast or lunch or on your commute - some romance, some murder, some heartbreak - told so well by mystery star Jan Burke.
