Alas, this is one of the lamer fictional accounts of the life of Richard III. Tyler-Whittle's concept of the man reminds me of a reflection cast in a pool, somehow distorted and impossible to touch without destroying. He is a one-dimensional figure with no real blood in him. The book is oddly unbalanced with a great deal of time being given to the early days, yet with no suggestion of what Richard did or how he behaved to make the boys he met them love him enough to stay with him all his life an [...]

I think the author did a fine job with the always tricky task of historical fiction. Characters I had known of before came to life, and I felt terribly sad at the end. For the record, I have read many books on this time period when I was younger, including Shakespeare's plays. The books came from variety of POVs, many were the tales of the women involved on either side of the Wars of the Roses and at least one totally sympathetic to Henry VII. So even before the "King in the Car Park" re-ignited [...]

This is historical fiction and not bad. He does give a fairly good historical account. This obviously not the Richard III of Shakespeare, but Shakespeare could not insult the Tudors. The writing is good and the read was not difficult. I generally do not read this type of fiction.

After watching The White Queen, I've become needy to learn about Richard III, and this was the only item at the library I could find with a simple search. I was hoping for something with historical accuracy but with enough fiction to fill in the gaps, and I feel this met my needs. Although I was disappointed that some periods of time are skipped, overall I was quite pleased. I'm now hoping to find something about Richard's loyal knights - something like Fellowship of the White Boar or something. [...]

I don’t quite trust historical fiction, because too much of it is merely romance tricked out in costume. Tyler-Whittle’s novel however rings true. It’s enjoyable to read a kindly view of Richard III, although not nearly as intriguing as Shakespeare’s, and the Tudors’, version of the last Plantagenet. What is it about certain villains that is so attractive and fascinating? I found Tyler-Whittle’s Richard a fine person and a well drawn character, but, I’m afraid, a bit of a yawn. Nic [...]

An interesting look at the life of Richard III. Not really a biography but not completely historical fiction either. This book weaves together as much as possible about Richard and his life, with a twist that most writers have not taken. I recommend this book! Great read!
